Shri Bhupender Gupta assumed charge as the Chairman & Managing Director of NHPC Limited, India’s premier hydropower Company and a Navratna Enterprise of Government of India on 04.09.2025.
Shri Bhupender Gupta holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA in Operations Management. He began his professional career with ACC Ltd in 1991 and started his CPSU career by joining SJVN Limited in 1995, where he served for 12 years in various capacities. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the planning, erection, commissioning and O&M of the 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Plant, India’s largest operational hydroelectric project. He also served on deputation in Bhutan for about three years (2002–2005) with the 1020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Power Project.
In March 2007, he joined REC Limited, where he contributed to project financing of hydro and thermal projects for nearly six years. He subsequently served as Additional Chief Executive Officer in REC Transmission Projects Company Limited and REC Power Distribution Company Limited, leading operations and overseeing project execution, management and consultancy for power sector projects across India. Under his leadership, several flagship Government of India programs — including Saubhagya, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and PMDP — were successfully implemented.
In December 2020, he joined the Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (Bhutan) as Director (Technical) on deputation, where he led ongoing construction activities and resolved long-pending contractual and technical issues. Later, on June 9, 2023, he assumed the position of Director (Technical), THDC India Limited (THDCIL). At THDCIL, he played a pivotal role in commissioning of Unit-1 (660 MW) of Khurja Super Thermal Power Project. He also guided teams to overcome significant technical challenges in the Tehri Pump Storage Plant (PSP), leading to successful commissioning of Units 1 & 2 (250 MW each).
After assuming the charge of CMD of NHPC on 04.09.2025, he is instrumental in expediting the commissioning process of Subansiri Lower (2000 MW) HE Project and after his assuming the charge, Wet Commissioning of two units (250 MW each) has been commenced.
Since May 1, 2025, he has also been holding the additional charge of CMD, SJVN Limited.
With an illustrious career spanning over 34 years, including 31 years in Power CPSUs, he has contributed significantly to the Indian power sector across hydro, thermal, renewable energy, transmission, and distribution domains. His contribution encompassed planning, design, execution, contract and project management, and O&M of large hydro projects as well as transmission and distribution projects.
His future vision focuses on addressing India’s growing power demand through non-fossil fuel-based resources, with the aim of making our country self-reliant in energy security. His vision emphasizes sustainable development through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies, including EV-grid integration, cybersecurity, digital protection, green hydrogen, bioenergy and energy storage solutions.
Apart from his professional accomplishments, he is also an avid sports enthusiast. He actively plays badminton and table tennis and has represented his organisation in many inter-CPSU tournaments
