Climate change continues to be one of the most critical existential challenges facing humanity and the natural world. It transcends national boundaries, and its impacts are already being felt globally. The effects of climate change on nature (PRAKRITI (प्रकृति) in Hindi) are profound, complex, and far-reaching. The urgency to act has never been greater. At the same time, climate action presents an opportunity to build a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable global future.
The Government of India has undertaken several initiatives to achieve its enhanced Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in a cost-effective and sustainable manner. In this context, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the guidance of the Ministry of Power (MoP) and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), has established the national framework for the Indian Carbon Market (ICM). This framework aims to lower the carbon intensity of the economy through the trading of Carbon Credit Certificates, with active participation from both public and private stakeholders.
In February 2025, BEE successfully organized the First International Conference on Carbon Markets – PRAKRITI (Promoting Resilience, Awareness, Knowledge, and Resources for Integrating Transformational Initiatives). The conference served as a vital platform, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, experts, and practitioners to deliberate on emerging trends and future pathways of carbon markets.
Building on this momentum, BEE is organizing the 2nd International Conference on Carbon Markets – PRAKRITI 2026, in association with the World Bank, UNFCCC–Regional Collaboration Center for the MENA and South Asia and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) as knowledge partners. Guided by the theme “Unlocking Carbon Finance for NDC Implementation – Global Partnerships and Digital Pathways” the conference will explore how digital innovation, international cooperation, and climate finance can accelerate the development of robust carbon markets.
By fostering knowledge exchange and highlighting digital and financial advancements, PRAKRITI 2026 promises to be a pivotal platform for collaboration in the global effort to combat climate change and mobilize finance for a low-carbon future.
