Shri B.N. De Bhowmick is a distinguished electrical engineer who graduated in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1983. He is a Member of CIGRE and IEEE, and is widely recognized for his expertise in power transmission systems.

Shri Bhowmick began his professional career with NTPC in 1983 as an Executive Trainee, where he was actively involved in the erection, testing, and commissioning of 400 kV substations and transmission lines. Following the amalgamation of the transmission business of various power utilities, he joined POWERGRID in 1991, where he served in several key technical and leadership roles.

He possesses extensive experience in Condition Monitoring and Transformer Diagnostics and has headed the expert group on Operation & Maintenance (O&M) of transformers and reactors in POWERGRID. His contributions have been instrumental in formulating POWERGRID’s O&M policies, standardizing maintenance procedures, and resolving critical O&M challenges across various installations nationwide.

Shri Bhowmick has made significant contributions to the field through the publication of numerous technical papers on Condition Monitoring of Transformers and Reactors, including topics such as Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA), Frequency Response Analysis (FRA), and oil testing, presented at various national and international conferences.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Shri Bhowmick has played a vital role in the engineering, commissioning, operation, maintenance, and condition monitoring of high-voltage transmission assets, including 1,200 kV systems. As a member of POWERGRID’s expert group on transformer condition monitoring and DGA, he has authored several authoritative papers in this domain.

Shri B.N. De Bhowmick superannuated as Executive Director, POWERGRID, after rendering decades of exemplary service to the Indian power sector. He currently serves as the Technical Co-Chair, CIGRE India.
