Vendor Development Session – Make in India for Power Generation
(Thermal | Nuclear | Renewables including Hydro)
The energy sector serves as the prime mover of India's economic growth and remains central to realizing the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. As India's largest integrated power utility, NTPC Limited plays a pivotal role in delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity while transitioning to a low-carbon energy mix
In line with India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), increasing the share of non-fossil fuel-based generation remains a strategic priority. NTPC has been at the forefront of this transition, with a rapidly expanding portfolio of renewable energy, hydro, nuclear, green hydrogen, energy storage and carbon reduction initiatives, contributing significantly to India achieving 50% of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources well ahead of the target timeline.
The National Electricity Plan (NEP) Vol-I (Generation) 2022-32, notified by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), targets a non-fossil based installed capacity of approximately 500 GW by 2029-30, rising to 57.4% by 2026-27 and 68.4% by 2031-32. It projects a peak demand of 277.2 GW (2026-27) and 366.4 GW (2031-32), with total installed capacity estimates of 609,591 MW and 900,422 MW, respectively.
In line with nation goal, NTPC’s capacity addition targets are increased from the existing 130 GW to 149 GW by 2032 and 244 GW by 2037. This expansion directly aligns with NTPC’s long-term capacity addition plans and renewable & nuclear energy ambitions.
Thermal
For effective thermal, renewable energy integration, NTPC’s projects increasingly require the adoption of advanced and
emerging technologies. These technologies are essential to ensure delivering reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity while transitioning to a low-carbon energy mix. With a sharp increase in demand for power generation infrastructure and advanced technologies, there is a strategic need for development and strengthening of indigenous manufacturing capabilities to support NTPC’s project execution, reduce import dependence, ensure supply-chain security, and optimise lifecycle costs.

Hydro Power
India’s energy sector, with an installed capacity of 520.51 GW, forms the backbone of economic growth and is central to meeting rising power demand projected to increase fourfold by 2047. As the country accelerates its transition towards sustainable, non-fossil fuel sources, hydropower plays a critical role by providing flexible, dispatchable and clean energy essential for balancing the intermittency of solar and wind generation.
NHPC, India’s premier hydropower development organisation, has the capability to undertake hydro projects from conceptualisation to commissioning. With a total installed capacity of 8,832.90 MW—including 8,271.20 MW from hydro—NHPC contributes approximately 16.24% of India’s total installed hydro capacity. The company is currently developing over 9,204 MW under active construction, 7,666 MW under clearance and 10,830 MW under survey and investigation, with long-term plans to reach over 23 GW by 2032 and 50 GW by 2047 across hydro, solar, wind and green hydrogen.
Aligned with the Government of India’s Public Procurement Policy – Make in India (PPP-MII), NHPC is strengthening indigenous manufacturing and supplier capabilities to support its ambitious expansion targets. With large-scale hydro capacity addition underway, there is a strategic need to enhance domestic vendor ecosystems to ensure reliable, sustainable and technologically advanced power generation infrastructure.
